Clocks

I had a blast making these clocks, and learned a new skill. It was my first time using resin, and installing clock kits.

12x12 Eclipse Clock

Each clock was individually handmade and has it’s own unique imperfections. I hand painted the tips of the black hands white for easy viewing. I chose a different eclipse phase (from beginning to end) to represent each number. The totality corona makes up the middle of the clock, and the solar prominence (unique to this, April 2024, eclipse) circles around that, between the corona and number phases. The 12 is the full sun, 1-4 get smaller as the moon covers the sun, 5, 6, and 7 are totality phases of Baily’s Beads and the Diamond Ring, then 8-11 show the sun return as the eclipse ends. Crafting these clocks, from image creation, to final product, was a labor of learning and love. Visit my social media accounts to see stories I’ve shared throughout the process.

The clocks have different hand designs, making them each even more unique.

Handmade items often have imperfections, these clocks are no exception. Below are some examples of imperfections in the finish including sealing imperfections between the image and the resin, bubbles inside the resin, and scratches on top of the resin.

Video footage highlighting large resin bubbles in a clock.

When viewed straight on, as you look at a clock to tell the time, the bubbles and problems are not as noticable- they don’t hinder the functionality of the clocks at all.

A little story about my clock crafting and creating process:

My clock crafting steps:

  • cut 12×12 wood backs

  • paint the edges for a more finished look

  • affix the image (clock face) and seal to protect

  • drill a hole for the clock kit to fit through

  • apply resin- pour, remove bubbles, trim and clean excess, let cure

  • attach hanging hardware, wall bumpers, clock mechanics, and hands

  • set clock to current time and enjoy

This clock making adventure was a success, and I’m looking forward to making a second batch! Look out for my production videos on social media.

The clock I kept for myself is still working great in my guest bathroom, it’s a perfect addition to the outer space theme.
