Fireflies and Rye

Fireflies are like twinkling stars we can hold in our hands.

Fireflies are like twinkling stars we can hold in our hands. They bring the magic of the cosmos closer to the ground. The blueness of the rye and pops of color from the yellow rocket mimic the cold metal of the grain bin and dancing light from the fireflies. The same tones sparkle in the night sky and Milky Way above this Midwest farm yard.

While admiring the blue hue of the rye and chasing fireflies all over my sister’s farm, I created this image on a summer night in June 2023.

My dog, Rey, having fun waiting for fireflies.

Fireflies and Rye is also available as a matted 8 inch print.

I was featured in an issue of Chasing Light Magazine, Fireflies and Rye was one of the photos I shared in my spread.

Fireflies flash their own laser show in the wetlands.

My family and I watched these fireflies for about an hour, there were so many at Pearl’s Fen.

It was a time of reflecting together on the difficulties we had been through that year.

I took all my photos and inserted every firefly I could into one image, and blended a Milky Way sky photo from the year before, as I hadn’t recently been out late enough when I put this image together.

There are roughly a kajillion fireflies.

Our dog didn't have as much fun as we humans did, she was bored just sitting on the boardwalk.

I recommend going to hang out with some fireflies at your next earliest convenience.

I am currently working on making this photo into a coaster.

If you are interested, you can see my coaster making process in my projects section, and find my videos on Social Media.

It was my first time painting the edges of the coasters black, I think it adds a little extra.
